Srinivasan Suresh MD, MBA, FAAP is the Chief Information Officer & Chief Medical Information Officer of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) of UPMC. He is a practicing pediatric emergency physician at CHP, and a Visiting Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. At CHP, one of the top ranked children’s hospitals in the country, he oversees operations, budgeting and strategy as relates to the information technology functions of the hospital. Additionally, he serves as the medical officer for patient safety & quality of care.
Prior to his leadership role at CHP, he was the Medical Director for Emergency Medicine at Children’s Hospital of Michigan (CHM), Detroit and the hospital’s CMIO. At CHM, he was responsible for the day to day operations and ensuring standards of emergency care for a pediatric emergency department with an annual census exceeding 90,000 patient visits. As a member of the board of directors and as the vice-chief of finance and strategy for University Pediatricians, he was involved in the operations, strategic initiatives and fiscal wellbeing of a 150-physician practice plan with annual revenue of over $55 million. Dr. Suresh’s recognitions include awards for creating a timeline image (similar to stock charts) in the electronic medical record (EMR), and for an automated BMI calculator embedded in the EMR to identify overweight and obese children. His grants from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and from the Beckwith Foundation focus on minimizing medical errors, and on addressing costs of care.
He is a member of the section of emergency medicine and the council of clinical information and technology of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He chairs the medical informatics special interest group of the Academic Pediatric Association. Board certified in pediatric emergency medicine and in clinical informatics, his areas of interests are (a) the application of business intelligence tools and advanced data analytics to improve child health, patient and provider satisfaction, (b) creation of more robust clinical decision support tools in the electronic health record, and (c) using lean principles to enhance patient throughput hospital-wide. He has presented on these topics at national and international conferences. In December 2015, he gave a TEDx talk on “Applying Big Data to Little Patients”. An avid sports enthusiast, he is excited with the ongoing big data initiatives in sports and other service industries such as retail and entertainment, and hopes to infuse similar ideas in healthcare.
